Unsettling.

via tinycartridge:

I stumbled on this unsettling story of an obscure Pokémon bootleg/art-hack that I thought might be neat to share on here. I think this originated from 4chan, so I’ve no idea if this hack actually exists. It probably doesn’t, but it’s still a great concept/tale!:

I’m what you could call a collector of bootleg Pokémon games. Pokémon Diamond & Jade, Chaos Black, etc. It’s amazing the frequency with which you can find them at pawnshops, Goodwill, flea markets, and such.

They’re generally fun; even if they are unplayable (which they often are), the mistranslations and poor quality make them unintentionally humorous.

I’ve been able to find most of the ones that I’ve played online, but there’s one that I haven’t seen any mention of. I bought it at a flea market about five years ago.

This story began to make its rounds over forums and messageboards some years ago; chances are, you may have even read this before. Further research on my side revealed that no such bootleg ROM actually existed.

I went over this story the first time the previous night, and, pardon my French, ‘shit scared the fuck out of me. Needless to say, I barely got any sleep that night, my mind racing through what was described as the final battle with Ghost, the reality of life and death in what was once childlike play.

Perhaps its disconcerting tone stems from the fact that the alleged ROM reveals a dark quality to what was a good part of your childhood, like finding out that your hometown hero was a drug addict, or that B1 and B2 were just two strangers in banana costumes. When you thought you had fainted them, you had actually killed. You’re even forced to pay for your actions at the end of the game, in essence killing even you.

It simply enough shakes the very foundation of said good part of childhood. It’s a pity it never really existed in the real world. If it did, I would have called it brilliant. If it didn’t, it’s only a matter of time before someone decides to recreate the ROM for real.
